Nirmal Wooden Toys and Crafts originate from Nirmal town in Telangana’s Adilabad district and are a 400-year-old traditional craft. Artisans known as Naqqash or Jingar use lightweight local wood (such as Ponki Chekka or white sander) to carve toys, figurines, and decorative items.
Historically, the craft included a wide range of wooden items — from toys to furniture — and was patronized by local rulers including the Nizams of Hyderabad. Today, these toys are hand-carved and painted, often with vibrant enamel (Duco) paints that give them a glossy sheen. Designs draw inspiration from nature, folklore, mythology, and daily life, making Nirmal toys both playthings and collectible art pieces.
